IFF Opens Vanilla Innovation Centre in Madagascar to Strengthen Sustainable Vanilla Development

New Facility Aims to Advance Vanilla Innovation, Quality, and Supply Chain Resilience

IFF has announced the opening of its new Vanilla Innovation Centre in Madagascar, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainable sourcing, innovation, and value creation across the global vanilla supply chain.

Located in Toamasina, Madagascar’s principal seaport and one of the country’s key vanilla-growing regions, the new facility brings together research, extraction, flavour development, and application capabilities under one roof. The initiative is designed to help IFF better understand vanilla at its origin while improving quality, traceability, and supply chain resilience.

Bringing Innovation Closer to the Source

Vanilla is one of the world’s most valuable natural ingredients, but its quality and characteristics can vary significantly due to climate conditions, cultivation practices, post-harvest handling, and curing methods.

By establishing a dedicated innovation hub near major vanilla-growing areas, IFF aims to gain deeper insights into crop variability and translate those findings into improved flavour solutions for customers worldwide.

The company believes that being closer to the source enables faster innovation cycles, stronger farmer engagement, and more sustainable sourcing practices.

Advanced Research and Development Capabilities

The Vanilla Innovation Centre includes several specialized facilities designed to support every stage of vanilla research and product development.

Key capabilities include:

  • Laboratory analysis for quality control and contaminant detection.
  • Extraction facilities to study different vanilla varieties and optimize processing methods.
  • Flavour creation and application laboratories for developing tailored vanilla profiles.
  • Research greenhouse facilities for studying vanilla cultivation and post-harvest techniques.

These integrated capabilities allow IFF to explore how growing conditions influence flavour development while creating more consistent and reliable vanilla solutions.

Supporting Sustainability and Knowledge Sharing

Beyond research, the centre will serve as a platform for collaboration and knowledge transfer.

IFF plans to conduct training programs, workshops, and technical sessions involving local teams, customers, industry experts, and partners. The goal is to strengthen vanilla expertise across the supply chain while promoting best practices in cultivation, processing, and innovation.

The company expects discoveries made at the centre to contribute to future flavour development projects while supporting a more resilient and sustainable vanilla industry.
